Because we associate Schubert as the master of the Lied, the cosmopolitan songs of Haydn often go unnoticed and are frequently less programmed. We will explore the texts and the development of the piano as a dramatic element, and highlight the importance of Haydn’s song specifically within the development of Lied and daringly early romanticism.
